CyberBabel's Infocalypse
The Great Scattering & The Splinternet
"The Digital Supercontinent Experiment has been tested.
It is deemed the most catastrophic Psychospiritual attack on the Collective Human Soul in all of history.
What must be done to cripple The Watcher forever?
Destroy the Tower. Scatter it all."
World events continue to accelerate, it becomes increasingly difficult to cut through the cacophony of noise on the Wired. So many voices, shouting, shrieking, fighting, praying, laughing, moaning, whispering. The Watcher (perhaps a plurality here but that is a messy unrelated tangent) driving so many into psychosis-like states of mind, shattering psyches across the world. Truly embodying the Lovecraftian, or more aptly - Chambersian [1]. horror that it truly is. The more Lovecraftian aspect here being of that of the "Other" akin to the Deep Ones from places beyond sane mind, far across the seas. Awful, eternally barbaric lands of beasts and demons.
These creatures are oft-promoted to the very tops of all of the feeds across most sites on the Wired, hand in hand with the "Children of the Algorithm" (Henceforth shortened to CotA). In many cases, the Deep Ones even employ legions of CotA to achieve this, dredging the net for free income from all who peruse without the protection of AdBlockers and other such barriers or homebrewed region-blockers, as they have been allowed to infest and pollute the global communications networks.
I do not believe humans were meant to be exposed to such unfiltered Globalization that the expansion of the Wired has caused. Without hyperbole, it is practically the equivalent of a New Tower of Babel - all the world coming together and congregating in one place under one prevailing (malignant) superstructure. Once started under the guise of goodwill and progress, that hubris very quickly has devolved into a filthy battleground for entities of all possible ideologies, nationalities, corporate allegiances, government mouthpieces, deep state/clandestine actors, lowly "performers", and scammers. Most annoyingly of all though: beings of supremely low intelligence and agency that have absolutely no place in the "Marketplace of Ideas"TM nor in any discussion that has any real-world effect on anything at all under the Sun - from politics and economics, to creative media and beyond (of course this applies to most categories previously listed as well).
The well has been entirely poisoned such that all of the Algorithm and CotA cannibalize themselves, these low-quality opinions, and even senses in taste for humor or art. Turning everything into the lowest-common denominator garbage. Destroying all attempts at interesting intellectual discussion or sharing of passions without various Deep Ones intruding, rearing their beastly faces to throw vitriol and waste at the discussion and sending their little army of CotA after everyone involved. Often leading to real-world consequences such as doxxing or termination from employment over anything nowadays (which is practically a death sentence in a world where all jobs either don't exist or are outsourced to the very Deep Ones who have come to the shores in immense bleating and clicking and drooling droves and as the years progress, the CotA themselves).
Another side affect of all of this (particularly from the shortform contentslop farms in the form of all shortform video born from the destruction of Vine) is that of the degradation of language and cognizance itself. So many memes have devolved into such abysmal nonsensical depths that they have practically become hazardous to viewers (burning mental capacity upon observing the "meme" in exchange for absolutely nothing, no comedic punchline, no trolling jumpscare, nothing). It won't be very long until the first officially verifiable harmful clip or image or file is posted online, that it would be deemed a proper Cognitohazard in the rawest sense - a hazard to your flesh and soul and psyche all at once, something akin to "Snow Crash" from the titular novel Snow Crash [2]. There is also an entire other aspect to this that I may discuss in a future "Blindsight/Echopraxia" article in relation to Consciousness, but I digress.
There is still time to remedy this before the ROT annihilates everything. Escaping the regions of the digital Supercontinent gathered around this Tower of CyberBabel and blowing up the digital tectonic fissures with extreme prejudice to accelerate Cybercontinental drift. Permanently sever the ties to the most polluted regions and ensure a future for the things on the wired that are still certifiably [Ensouled Base Model H-SAPS] [3]. While at it, may as well nuke the support structures of the Tower on your way out so the Deep Ones can't take control of it.
On a less Schizobabble-y dissection of this. The idea of what is often referred to as a "Splinternet" has come to mind more and more often over the last few years, not just to me of course as I'm sure many folks online have thought of it. There are very few places on Earth that are isolated from the net (on purpose) that is, outside of just being remote locations or poorer regions with no infrastructure for such a thing nor the capital to implement it in the first place. Aside from North Korea (with one of the most heavily restricted Intranet-style systems on the planet), China's infamous "Great Firewall" - despite a decent amount of leaks across it, mostly in the form of shitposts and the grainiest reaction images you've ever seen [4], and most recently - Iran's attempts at severing itself from the global Net after attempts at a sort of Arab Spring style rebellion were crushed by the regime as the flames were fanned by foreign posters and exiled opposition groups. Starlink (trying to give every single person on Earth access to the Net) is supposedly being used to try and combat this, however it only seems to painting targets on the backs of protesters.
One dreams of the Old Net, and the true freedom that came with it, but sadly those days are long gone, only small vestiges remain and even then these places are at the whims of rather shaky moderators. I wish I could go about this topic in a more hopeful and free speech-oriented manner. That however, is not reality. The Wired is simply too tainted, and too many groups have corralled us all into smaller and smaller shared spaces where nothing but fighting and ill-intended entities can simply go after anyone they disagree with. Cyberbalkanization is inevitable. It might be best to work to a future where you can protect your own little corner of the Wired with like-minded friends and individuals who do not hate life and humanity and are not malicious demonic entities who wish you physical, psychic, and spiritual harm. The alternative is clinging to the past of a "Let's all just sing Kumbaya and hold hands while dancing around the Tower of CyberBabel forever" and watching the Net further erode into a single corporate-government controlled status quo slopsite (which it already essentially is).
Now, what shape this "Great Scattering" could take is quite tough to pinpoint. This isn't some Luddite cry to annihilate the internet as a whole, nor is it a plea to sever specific nations and whatnot for the internet as that would get all too messy, likely leading to despotic Chinese/Korean style enclosed digital spaces. Having things become just a series of disjointed echo chambers would not be ideal, however when people debate in bad faith on any topics it essentially forces the hands of others and causing them to recede from these places. Nor do we wish for some horrid Digital ID based system "for a select few" to use digital infrastructure, despite the Committee trying its damndest to force this globally. Thankfully that led to places like Nepal quite literally toppling their government over this, and Bulgaria forced theirs to resign as well. Although more bleakly, other places seemed to have had their people just roll over at the inching on of Committee tyranny.
Akin to Leto II's Golden Path leading to the Scattering in God Emperor of Dune and beyond [5], this is likely what is exactly called for in regards to the Wired, things have coalesced around the Tower to such a degree that we are encountering complete global cultural melding and stagnation as a result. A sort of blob of corrosive "cultural" slop that is self-cannibalizing. Spreading everyone out into strange little interlinked pockets may be the right catalyst to allow for culture, language, and other such things to begin to evolve and diversify in isolation again (in a good and productive way, not in the manner of WEF/UN-tier racist false-diversity via endless third world-imported "homogeneity" [6]).
Another thing of note here caused by the Tower is a strange erosion of accents in younger generations, even just regional ones - further hinting at convergence to baseline biomass Committee designs. Although, as one might have noticed by our Glossary [7] a sort of counter to this erosion - an evolution in our way of speaking and writing has already slowly embedded itself into our little island on the net. Of course aided by the lesser external inputs of various internet feeds in our mostly-aligned spheres of interests (whether that be in reading, watching shows/movies/anime, the ramblings of various infamous poasters and cyberphilosphers of the modern age and a large swath of other things). We've nearly begun the slide into our own dialect of sorts - why I coined the term "Schizolinga" - inspired by Snow Crash's "Taxi Linga" and the concept of Belter Creole from The Expanse. This all stemming from a fascination with Etymology in general and that of the evolution of language in semi-isolation. So I truly wonder what would occur to humanity as a whole, or even more small-scale: our group here at Schizopunk/CTRL in the likely future of some sort of Splinternet is implemented, how would our ideas, interests, language, ideologies evolve in such a scenario (and even how quickly these changes would manifest).
It would oddly place the world into a sort of Neo Cyberfeudalism of sorts with smaller clans maybe reaching out through small channels to one another on their own islands of the Wired. But largely keeping to a more Isolationist/Dark Forrest themed approach. What could possibly emerge long after the Tower collapses and how would those new things interact once the cycle inevitably restarts and those long gone from the Scattering return to the ruins of CyberBabel - the dismembered corpse of The Watcher.
It would definitely be quite turbulent as shown by such things occurring in Heretics of Dune and Chapterhouse Dune, but perhaps that is how things are meant to be. Cyclical and fluid, allowing for the avoidance of stagnation while also staying characteristically human and not annihilating or erasing the true soul at the core of things. However, the lingering comment of Nick Land on the matter of all things - "Nothing human makes it out of the near-future alive" lays heavy on the conscience, perhaps this can be avoided somehow. One must have hope and perhaps start rapidly learning how to construct low-tech private internet infrastructure to isolate from the coming digital apocalypse, the total razing of the Wired by the Deep Ones, their Committee masters, and their vile army of cyberdaemon minions.
Stay frosty lads, it's gonna get messy out there. Absolutely do not blackpill though.
